Is there a neighborhood in New York City that doesn’t have a great dinner? These corner diners, luncheonettes, and coffee shops remain a deep part of the city’s character even as chain restaurants encroach on their turf. At Victory Mitsubishi we have some pretty strong opinions about our NYC diners, and which are the best diners in the city. Of course, much of the time people choose their diner based on location. We’ll look at some of our favorites off the tourist path and closer to home in Bronx and Brooklyn. What’s your favorite NYC diner? Let us know!
Whether you’re coming in from Mount Vernon or New Rochelle, you’re probably near one of the best diners in the city. It’s difficult to narrow such a vast selection of coffee shops into one list but here are some of our favorite NYC diners:
A quick commute to upper Manhattan’s Washington Heights is worth it for the scratch-made dishes at WaHi Diner at the corner of Broadway and 164th Street (3915 Broadway). While their chilis is their claim to fame and they’ve won awards for their seafood, we always go for the Disco Fries—French fries smothered in melted mozzarella cheese and brown gravy. Of course, all your favorite Greek dishes are tucked into a corner of the menu. Or start your morning with a giant three-egg omelet and a cup of coffee for under 20 bucks.
Don’t let their website fool you—they’re back to business as usual at Tibbett Diner (3033 Tibbett Avenue). Tucked into a bucolic block in Riverdale, you’ll find all of your authentic diner favorites for breakfast and lunch with many of the entrees priced well under $20. Arrive hungry because they don’t skimp on the portions. Try a half-pound charbroiled burger like the Alpine burger with Swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Get it deluxe with fries, lettuce, and tomato, then wash it all down with an egg cream for a classic NYC diner treat with a price tag that’ll take you back in time
Beautifully rehabbed with subway tile half-walls and vintage-inspired tufted booths, Skyview Diner (2365 Westchester Avenue) looks like it might be pricey but that’s not the case. If you need to carb load, this is your place because the pancake and French toast menus are huge. All their French toast is made with challah. Attentive service means you’ll have plenty of coffee to go with that tall stack.
Of course, we must shout out to our neighbors at Cozy Cottage (4105 Boston Road). Specials every day, hot hero sandwiches, and variety that spans diner classics to Latin, Italian, and Greek dishes mean that you should plan to allow time to decide. Celebrate your new car purchase with a well-earned slice of limoncello cake!
At Victory Mitsubishi we’re proud to be a part of the Bronx community! We’re worth the drive from Westchester for all your automotive needs. Our team loves the Bronx and we’re happy to share our favorite local places. Check out our favorite Bronx restaurants and lounges while you’re here!
