What Battery Does Tesla Use?

So, what battery does Tesla use to get the impressive ranges of its various models? Up until recently, Tesla has been installing batteries made with Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide. These were high-capacity, high-performance batteries, but were expensive to produce and required using non-renewable resources like Nickel and Cobalt. Tesla announced in October of 2021 that they were switching to batteries made with lithium-iron-phosphate, or LTP, for most of their vehicles. The manufacture of LTP batteries doesn’t require any nickel or cobalt and is less expensive. LTP batteries are also safer because they are more stable.

The Tesla Roadster is manufactured with a Lithium ion battery, comprised of 6,831 individual Li-ion cells. It is about the size of a trunk and weighs about 900 pounds. Lithium ion batteries are the best commercially available batteries on the market. Tesla credits them with the 4 second 0-60 mph acceleration of the Roadster.
