How to Jumpstart a Car: Getting Started

Before we get into how to jumpstart your BMW, let’s talk about what you’ll need. Grab a set of jumper cables and flag down a helper with a car. You’ll be working primarily with the battery under the hood, so park both vehicles with batteries easily accessible. If your car does not have a battery under the hood, check for the starter aid terminals to the side of the engine.

How to Jumpstart a Car: Connecting Your Cables

Let’s say your battery is toast, and you need to learn how to jumpstart a BMW 328i to get going. How do you jumpstart a car? It’s just a matter of hooking up your jumper cables in the right order and giving your battery time to recharge. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

  1. Attach one of the red clamps to your own BMW vehicle’s positive (red) terminal.
  2. Attach the other red clamp to the positive (red) terminal on the assisting vehicle
  3. Attach the black clamp to the assisting vehicle’s negative (black) terminal.
  4. Attach the other black clip to any unpainted metal surface on your vehicle.

It’s important to keep the ends of the jumper cables separate throughout this process. If the metal clamps touch, they could cause sparks and damage the vehicle or cause injury.

How to Jumpstart a Car: Charging the Battery

Once the cables are connected, ask your helper to start their vehicle. This generates a charge to help your battery regain strength. You’ll need to wait a few minutes to give your battery a chance, but then, you can try to start your BMW. If your car doesn’t start, just wait a few more minutes before trying again. If your car flips on, you can remove the jumper cables in the opposite order that you connected them. Thank your helper and be sure to drive around for at least 30 minutes, so your alternator can get to work.
